History of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kodunganoor
The sun called Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan rose almost eight decades ago, even before the attainment of freedom. It was established in 1938 in Bombay. This institution which blossomed with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi is actually the capital and abode of Indian Educational System.
Leaving the constrains of formal education, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has made a giant leap into various fields today, like arts, literature, science, medicine, research etc. However, it was in 1987, that BVB gained roots in Thiruvananthapuram and was formally established.
The temple of education which originally commenced with approximately 60 students at Chettikulangara has today spread its wings and houses almost 3000 odd students under its fold.
In its nascent stage, it had many inspiring personalities like Sri.m Shooranatt Kunjanpullai as its Chairman and Sri. S Radhakrishnan (held the post of Secretary & Principal simultaneously) as the leaders.
By 1988, it was Sri. Anantha Krishnan IAS(Retd) & Prof. P. Gopalaraman who adorned the post of Chairman & Secretary respectively.
It was during this period that BVB was shifted from Chettikulangara to Vazhuthacaud, Vellayambalam and then to its own building at Kodunganoor.
During the tenure of Sri. P.N. Nair I.F.S (Retd) as Chairman & Sri.P Gopalaraman as Secretary, of BVB, the school overcame the hurdles and miseries of nascence and started climbing the stepping stones of success.
With the passage of time, BVB was able to carve out a niche for itself, by winning various arts/ sports competitions apart from inculcating quality education, to thereby become one of the most sought after schools in the city. What makes it distinctive is its educational system upholding Indian culture and values.
In 1986, itself, Bhavan’s College of Communications & Management started functioning. Moreover, in Thiruvananthapuram two other CBSE schools also started functioning at Manvila & at Poojapura, apart from the school at Kodunganoor.
The special award conferred to BVB, former President K.R Narayanan, for promoting religious harmony was a feather in the cap of the institution, and the same ethos and spirit prevails in its all other institutions also.
Lekshmi V who had secured First Rank in the CBSE stream; Abhijith who grabbed a meritorious place in IAS are the pride of our school. There are many music prodigies from our school, like Job Kurian, Kumari Nandini, Adarsh V, Devika Balasubramanian, who have now earned a name for themselves. Further, some of the shining stars of the tinsel world like Prithviraj, Jishnu, Arun, Ambareesh etc also are our alumini.
After the formal inauguration of the silver jubilee of our school, on June 23, 2012, a wide range of programmes and policies were flagged off. The philanthropic gesture which started with ‘Orupidiyari’ – a handful of rice has now extended to clothes, books, stationaries, medicines, money etc, which are periodically collected assembled and is reached to several orphanages and needy people in and around the city.
Our students are taught to live in harmony with nature. They are made to know the importance of organic & agriculture. Thanks to efforts taken by the school authority along with the students that, we have even achieved a certificate of excellence from the (State Govt.), Honourable Minister of Agriculture Sri. P.K. Mohan Kumar.
With an aim to good mental, physical growth of students along with a healthy creative life, a number of programmes, workshops and classes are organised.
Umpteen number of opportunities are offered to the students for their overall development, with this as an aim many clubs are functioning in our school like Arts, Literary, Science, Traffic, Health, Reading, Theatre, Nature, Eco, Heritage etc. Along with this, many activities are also organised under the aegis of these clubs and also separately.
